Ann Charles is one of the 'not enough' people in this world that truly understand the meaning of the phrase: "Don't take life too seriously. No one gets out alive".It's Christmas eve, and Montana (Monty) is closing up the bar after hosting the party for the locals - as traditionally has been done for ages by her family. While discussing things with her cousin, Buffalo, Monty's ex-boyfriend and Las Vegas police Detective, Joel, shows up to let her know her murderous ex-husband has escaped from prison...and she's on his list of visits to make.
Monty begins to have sensations of Deja Vu as events play out. It seems like things have happened before and she knows what Buff is going to say.
I have to admit, when events started to re-play as the evening 'reset', It took me a bit to figure out what was going on. AHA! Groundhog's day! I always enjoy Ann's sense of humor, and how she creates characters who are flawed - and they know it. To me, this makes them easier to relate to. I was pleased to find out this is just the beginning of the story for Joel and Monty. I hope to see more about Buff too!

The Old Man Back in Town Short Story Goldwash Mystery Book 1 edition by Ann Charles CS Kunkle Romance eBooks Reviews
I almost didn't read this simply because I don't typically enjoy short stories, however, since she is a favorite author of mine, I gave it a try. I'm so glad I did. The plot was such a unique idea. I can't say I've read anything quite like it before. It was funny and suspenseful. I can't wait to read about Montana in a full size novel!
As usual, Ann Charles has completely hooked me! This short story is a great introduction to a new series. Another reviewer left the perfect synopsis for the story, so I won't go there. I will say that the .99 cents I spent to "meet" these new characters and get a bit of flavor for them was well worth it. I'm an avid fan of Ann's books, and this short story was a great little read after getting caught up with both of her series'. It definitely has me excited for a novel length book from the Goldwash Mystery Series!
This is a different kind of short story. You have several different beginnings and one ending. But, the beginning makes a difference when looking at the ending. Confused yet? You really need to read this to understand.
I was drawn into this story. It's different than most short stories, as it's told in that "Groundhog Day" fashion. I found it really entertaining.
The repeated structure is a little confusing, but it gives the author a chance to show some literary chops. Each time through, is a different take on the same story. I liked the wry wit in the opening. The bodice-ripper repeat was a bit over-the-top, probably tongue-in-cheek (take that as you will). She really turns up the steam as the story moves forward.
Joel is a bit of a nin-entity, but I can certainly see Montana playing a part in a longer work, and I can't wait to hear more about the further adventures of Brunhilda.
This is a really quick read, and a good intro to a promising author.
Fun book or novella as they say. Is interesting and quite unique. I enjoyed it a lot. I'm wondering if this going to be a new series? Certainly has lots of room to grow into a book. I would recommend it. Keep in mind it's short and the characters are not fleshed out. Still a enjoyable read and melding. Of the different versions.
I am not a fan of short stories, they start and end. Trust this writer even though it looks like someone goofed up, or maybe you're losing your mind, within the short story of this book you are brought into the book. This is one of the few shorts that make you want the next book right now as you need to know what will happen with the characters. Ann's characters are full bodied; they feel like a friend of long standing and one you cannot wait to visit soon. Where I would like a short book is if the next book is weeks away from coming out so it is a teaser. Having to wait so long to visit good friends again, well I don't like it! I've become a got to have it now reader as I truly love the Ann writes and brings her characters to life!
