When all hope is lost, who will raise the banner of light?

War grinds on, spreading its shadow over all the land. In the wake of his overwhelming victory, King Lennart marches on the Empress Teodora, helpless and undefended in her capital. Though battered, Teodora is far from defeated, setting in motion a new plot which threatens to annihilate all of Lennart's allies.

Unaware of the peril about to overtake him, Kendryk is torn between duty to his family and to his cause. While he struggles to recover from his loss, Anton joins Kendryk in his quest, but will be sent down another, more dangerous path.

Gwynneth survived an attack by Teodora's most unrelenting assassin, but she will soon face a test that threatens to destroy her.

Maryna, the heir to Terragand, travels to faraway lands hoping to provoke a confrontation with Teodora, but her journey takes an unexpectedly deadly turn.

Her ambitions magnified at the prospect of her mother's downfall, Elektra must decide if she's willing to pay the price needed to fulfill her destiny.

And even as Braeden triumphs over an enemy who has long threatened him, his next steps take him down a path that will lead to tragedy.

Faith and friendship are tested, alliances shattered, and a new generation rises in Winter of the Wolf, book four in the Desolate Empire series.

Winter of the Wolf The Desolate Empire Book 4 edition by Christina Ochs Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Find a comfy spot, snuggle up with a cup of coffee and a blanket. This story is the #4 in the continuation of The Desolate Empire series. Christina Ochoa brilliantly balances court intrigue and human emotion in this book, without compromising the strength of the characters as their lives ebb and flow in their clash with the overbearing and heartless Empress Teodora. The story is captivating, frustrating and heart wrenching and causes you to cheer on those rebelling against the empire. I am now waiting for #5...when oh, when will it be out?
Winter of the Wolf is the fourth book in Christina Ochs' Desolate Empire series. To be blunt, I have a lot of wonderful things to say about this book -- only I can't say any of them, for risk of spoiling the novel (and the entire series) for you.

What I can reveal is that it falls beautifully in line with the rest of the series. Winter of the Wolf is full of action, political drama, and jaw-dropping twists that literally made me shriek (and sometimes cry). Despite being a long novel, it read incredibly quickly and left me wanting more.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again this whole series is like a "clean" Game of the Thrones. An epic fantasy world, inspired by a real-world war. Multiple kingdoms fighting for control of one empire. Political intrigue, bloody battles, dark magic, and a little romance. All in a family friendly, no cursing, fade-to-black package.

If all of that sounds good to you, I guarantee you'll love this series!
Oh, MAN. Was this ever intense! I can barely get over it! Despite the incredible tragedy near the beginning (I seriously did not see it coming and was in a stunned state for the rest of the book), I can definitely say this is my favourite of the series so far. Beloved characters went on incredible adventures, overcame harrowing ordeals and betrayals, made tense alliances, and persevered incredible odds. The different stories and perspectives were fantastic and characters I didn't expect to reunite or interact made interesting connections. Braeden and Gwyennth's chapters were my favourites, but I also really liked Anton and Maryna's chapters, loved the development of Elektra, and Lennart for just being Lennart. There is so much more than can happen, and thanks to the cliffhanger ending, I literally have no idea what to expect next! This is an absolutely fantastic book and I'm so glad to have experienced it. I recommend it to all fantasy lovers! Get your copy today!
If multiple plot twists give you life, then this book—like the rest of the series—brings its A-game. Rumors spread about who’s dead and who’s actually not dead, which leads to interesting war strategy that aids or hinders the characters. You’re the only one with all the information, so it sucks knowing that something bad has happened, and someone on the other side of the war zone has no idea what just happened. It makes the pacing very intense!

For example, there was a relatively huge twist about a quarter into the novel which made me wonder how the rest of the novel would go. Another one exploded across the 80% marker and I was anxious to see how it would be rectified with just a few chapters left. For a war novel, there’s always a new surprise for your favorite character.

As always, I’m impressed by Och’s extensive research to create a war-torn continent seem realistic. From the war itself, to the political intrigue behind the scenes, I was able to visualize the world she further establishes and feel like I had a firm grasp of the current situation and the implications of each strategy.

Also, so many things happen. Each of her novels are pretty extensive, but she’s able to pack a lot of events into one novel that creates an interesting flow. Since she juggles so many characters POV, there’s a lot for the reader to soak up about where everyone is and what might happen to them.

Winter of the Wolf, like the rest of the series, is such a treat. There is so much to read so it’s hard to binge, but it definitely keeps you engaged the whole time. As much as I wanted to rush, I had to slowly enjoy each chapter.

A friendly reminder there are a lot of events and characters, so it does pay to read the whole series to fully enjoy this fourth addition to the series. You won’t regret it, especially if you love everything about Game of Thrones except the nudity.
Even though this is the second book in the Desolate Empire series that I have read, it is the fourth written. I should have probably read the second and third books that I bought but when I was offered a peek at the newest in the series in return for a voluntary review, I decided to take up the gauntlet and save the other books as prequel reading. I was not disappointed.
The first book, The Rising Storm, was a challenge since I had to train myself to read it as fantasy not history. I had no problem bridging to Winter of the Wolf. The author is consistent in her style and by the end of this book I felt I knew the characters as real people. Even though this was the longest book in the series thus far, I was disappointed when it ended. This is a stand-alone book amid a series.
While this is a story of war, the author lets the reader use his mind’s eye in deciding how much gore he is up to. For this reason, I like reading rather than watching a movie that presents the director’s point of view.
I am going to read the other two Desolate books at my leisure and I might even read Winter of the Wolf again.
Liked the battle and intrigue.
You never know what will happen next.

Hate that there is a minimum length for these reviews.
Easy to read, easy to follow - excellent twists and turns! I feel like I know the characters well. Can't wait for the next book!
